Hello and welcome to
City Mazda's January e-news.

Happy New Year!
Greetings everyone and Happy New Year! Can you believe we’re into the last year of the ‘noughties’ already? To think that 10 years ago we were all worrying about the Y2K bug!
Later this month we will enter the Chinese Year of the Ox, which is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. Perhaps not the ‘sexiest’ year but encouraging nonetheless. With the world currently in the midst of a financial crisis it’s good to know that hard work will still pay off.
That’s what we’re all facing now the festive season is over: a return to work, obligation and responsibility. But before I depress you any further I should also point out that numerologically speaking, 2009 is an 11 year, which is a master number. This means we all have the opportunity to tune into our higher selves and work together to make the world a better place. Now that doesn’t sound too bad, does it!
That’s all a little bit of fun, but in all seriousness, on behalf of everyone here we wish you and your family all the best for the coming year.

GOING ON A ROAD TRIP? READ THIS FIRST
|
There’s nothing like a summer road trip for creating great memories, whether it’s with the family or a group of friends. But before you hit the open road, it’s important to ensure your car is in the right shape. Some problems are unavoidable, but a lot can be prevented.
|
|
|
Here’s a checklist:
Tyre Pressure - make sure there is enough air in the tyres. Check the owner's manual to see how much pressure your tyres should have.
Oil - check the oil level and add oil if needed.
Transmission fluid - check the transmission fluid levels and add more if needed.
Other fluids - check the brake fluid, washer fluid, and power-steering fluid levels as well.
Seat belts - check seat belts to make sure they lock correctly and are not worn out.
Lights - make sure all lights on your car work, including indicators and high beams.
Wipers - make sure your wiper blades are in good condition. If they are old, consider replacing them before you leave.
Battery - check the battery terminal for corrosion.
Spare tyre - make sure your spare tyre is ready to be used if needed. Make sure you have a jack to use if you have a flat.
Your car is in good shape for your trip if you have checked all of these items. And if you’re in any doubt, bring it into us for a full safety check. |

BEER-BATTER SQUID
Fried calamari is a popular appetiser at restaurants. This version of fried squid uses a simple but tasty beer batter. If you do not have a deep-fryer, simply use a deep, heavy saucepan. Serve with condiments for dipping.
|
|
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1kg squid
- 1-1/2 cups rye flour
- 1 Tablespoon peanut oil
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 2 cans or bottles (stubbies) of beer
- 5 egg whites, beaten until stiff but not dry
- 4 cups vegetable oil
- 2 bunches curly parsley
Preparation:
To clean squid, remove purplish skin and separate head and tentacles from the body. Separate tentacles from the head and discard the head. Remove and discard the transparent quill from the body. Wash out the interior of the squid body. Dry on paper towels. Cut squid body into rings just over 1cm wide; leave tentacles uncut.
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, 1 tablespoon peanut oil, salt, and pepper and whisk to combine. Whisk in beer a little at a time. Carefully fold in the egg whites.
Heat oil in a deep-fryer to 190 degrees. Dip the squid rings and tentacles into the batter and fry in the deep fat for 2-1/2 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Keep warm.
Dry the parsley very well and plunge into the deep fat for 20 seconds. Drain on paper towels. Arrange the squid in a ring on a large platter and top with the parsley. Serve hot, with beer.
Serves 4.

Drinking beer
The ideal serving and drinking temperature for a well-made beer is six degrees.
There are four main 'enemies' of fresh beer. They all negatively affect beer's flavour or appearance. When 2 or more of them team up in combination, the beer is on a premature-aging-fast-track! It is best to minimise the exposure of any beer to:
| 1. |
Light |
| 2. |
Oxygen |
| 3. |
Age (long time periods between packaging and consumption) |
| 4. |
Heat (including pasteurisation, which heats beer to an extreme temperature) |
